Recycling metal shouldn't feel like a scary task. At Comal Iron & Metals, we're here to make the process as smooth and straightforward as possible. If you've ever wondered what happens when you pull into our yard with a load of metal, this blog is for you! Let’s walk you through each step of the process so you know exactly what to expect when you visit us.
1. Arriving at the Yard
As soon as you drive into our yard, you’ll notice our easy-to-access scale. This is where the process begins. Simply pull your truck, trailer, or car with your metal load onto the scale. The scale is designed to weigh your vehicle with all the metal inside, giving us the starting weight. Don't worry—our friendly front desk attendant will be there to signal when to move forward.
2. Moving Forward to the Yard
Once the initial weighing is complete, you'll be directed to drive further into the yard. There’s always someone nearby to guide you to the right spot, depending on what type of metal you’re recycling. We have designated piles for different materials, and our staff is more than happy to help you figure out where to go.
3. Unloading Your Metal
This is where the heavy lifting (pun intended) happens. Don’t worry; you won’t be on your own here. Our team will assist you in unloading the metal from your vehicle. Whether it’s scrap steel, aluminum, or copper, we’ll make sure it’s sorted correctly and efficiently.
4. Reweighing Your Vehicle
With your metal unloaded, it’s time to head back to the scale. You can drive onto it from either direction—it’s designed to work both ways. This second weighing helps us calculate how much metal you’ve brought in by comparing the vehicle's weight before and after unloading.
5. Getting Paid
After the final weight is determined, our attendant will calculate the total weight of the metal you recycled, apply the current payout rates, and give you a ticket. This ticket can be used at our on-site ATM to receive your payment immediately! If you’re due any change, be sure to see the attendant since the ATM doesn’t dispense coins. Any leftover change is donated directly to Pink Warrior Advocates—a cause close to our hearts.
